THE EVIL THAT WOMEN DO SERIES- LOVE ON TRIAL
I am your kind of regular girl next door, Spartan, well cultured, easygoing and beautiful. I am a complete and intelligent woman. i do my work with great diligence and immediate alacrity. My work involved getting the daily report of microbial analysis so I worked hand in hand with the head of production; we compared notes and reports. As a result, we formed a good working partnership.
My name is Ufuoma, i studied microbiology at UNIBEN. I was transferred to Lagos as the shift Quality Assurance Manager of a FMCG company. A whole lot of us were transferred among whom was the production manager among other staff. His name is Emeka.
While i was single then, Emeka was married with three kids. His wife and kids were down south and he went to visit occasionally. I had a serious relationship with a guy who was based in the UK. We usually talked on phone. My boyfriend, Uche dotted on me. He gave me everything i asked for. He left for the UK immediately after school. We went to the same school and were inseparable. Many of our colleagues envied us.
Uche was not only caring, he was always there. I saw him every day after lectures; he was there by my sickbed when i was sick. The nurses drove him away but he always sneaked back inside. He missed lectures because of me. Thankfully, this did not affect his grades. He still finished with a 2.1 in psychology. He went abroad for his masters in Managerial Psychology.
He sent me money even though he was schooling. He did not forget my birthdays, he sent me gifts. However, i missed him so much. I craved his presence. He did not visit Nigeria for two years. By then, i was already working.
Emeka noticed my loneliness and became my good friend. Since we worked together, it was easy to form a good partnership. He told me about married life, all the girls he dated before he got married and so on. He was so sincere. I found in him a friend i could share my thoughts with when uche was no longer available. We saw at work every day and people did not see our bond as anything strange since we worked so well together.
We got closer and closer and at times, I drove his car. He always told me when to change my hairdo and gave me money for it. We went to the beach sometimes. When his wife came visiting, I stayed away from him. She spent few days before she left and i was happy to have him back.
Uche still spoke with me every day on phone. I really loved uche but his absence was making me sad. I knew for sure that he was coming back for me. He assured me of his love everytime he called. I never doubted him, only wished he was with me. i took solace in the fact that i had a friend in emeka and because he was married, i had nothing to worry about because i knew our closeness would not result into anything. He had his family and i had my life ahead of me. Therefore, i was safe and did not see anything wrong in our friendship.
One day at work, Emeka touched my hair. He said he liked the feel of it. I smiled and continued with my work. At times, i travelled out of Lagos to attend to work at the head office in Port Harcourt. Emeka would always be waiting for me to arrive. One day, he told me i was beautiful and pulled me close. I could smell his cologne; it had a magical sensual effect on my senses. The touch made me alert and i quickly withdrew from him. He asked why i did not use make-up like other girls. I told him i was never used to it.
The next day, i took out my make-up kit that i bought but never really used. I tried it on my face the next morning, a little eyeshadow and lipgloss. Emeka was astonished, he hugged me. People said i looked different.
I spoke with Uche after work. He told me he wanted us to get married in December, six months away. That he was coming home and we could return to the UK after our wedding. I was so delighted. I could not wait to tell Emeka. We hooked up in an eatery after work and i told him. He was as excited as i was. He was happy for me. i could see it in his eyes and i liked him more. He stood up and hugged me tight with a peck on the cheek. We worked hand in hand out of the eatery. Then, he dropped me home. As i was about stepping out of the car, he held my hands and told me i was the most beautiful woman he ever met, that he would have married me if he met me first, that i was a good girl and he liked me alot. The words really touched me. He drew me closer to hug me and i held him tight. I was lost in his embrace. Before i knew it, he found my lips and kissed me. i surprised myself and kissed him back. All the pent up emotions were released. I think it was the horn of my neighbour’s car that separated us. Therefore, I quickly came down. I looked into his eyes before he drove away and i realised in that moment that we had just set fire to our hidden desires and it would take some time to quench. It was a serious fire. I felt my senses come alive, i had not felt like that in a long time, not since Uche left.I travelled on assignment to PH the next day so i didn’t see Emeka.
I returned three days later and went to see him in his apartment. He was so happy to have me back. He told me how much he missed me. He drew me close and i melted in his hands. He kissed me passionately. I did not know when he unbuttoned my top and carried me to the bedroom. We made love passionately. I was still in bed with him when Uche called. Fear crept into my soul. The phone kept ringing. Emeka picked it and saw who it was. He asked me to pick it. I could not so i switched it off.
I called Emeka the next morning and lied that i left my phone in the office and it was a cleaner that picked and switched it off. He believed me and asked about details for the wedding preparation. He showed me wedding dresses on the internet and wanted to know my choice. I was happy and chose a flowery white off the shoulder gown. He said he would order it.
At first, i felt guilty about what happened between Emeka and I but Emeka consoled me it would not happen again. However, we could not resist each other after that first night so we ended in bed every chance we got after that. I knew some colleagues were suspecting us but i couldn’t care less.’ I was simply chopping the head of my life [ mo n jaye ori mi]’.
I knew i was getting married and nothing was going to stop me. However, we were all called back to PH and the workload increased. I began working with a new person and we were not necessarily seeing much of each other again. He now lived at home with his family and i could not even call him as usual. He went back to being a dutiful husband and I did not miss him because my wedding was fast approaching. This was September so i faced my wedding preparation squarely. At times, he dropped me home or asked his driver to do so. He drove me around and was actively involved in the wedding preparation, took me to the tailor, to the spa for a massage etc but we did not end up in bed.
Emeka came home in November and we had our introduction. The wedding also came in December and all my colleagues were there with Emeka. Unfortunately, Emeka got drunk and they were all throwing banters at each other. I did not know he was boasting to them that he had me first before my groom and all the men laughed heartily. They mocked uche but i did not know all this until after the wedding. A friend was sitting close to them and told me all that happened.
Now i am in the UK with Uche, he never learnt about it and i did not tell him. He is still a good husband. I don’t know if I’ll get away with my sin but i have never had any extramarital affair since we got married and it’s not in my dream. Because he is such a loving husband, i wish i never did it. But the past is best buried where yesterday lives. what do you think?
