LIGHT IN THE MIDST OF DARKNESS by Moyosore Teniola

During the last Easter break, I was on a very long ATM queue waiting to withdraw some money. Directly behind me was a young man who came with his friend. They were arguing about an issue and because I was before them, I could hear them clearly.

.

The basis of their argument was that there are no decent ladies around anymore. One arguing for and the other against.

.

At a point, one of them said hello to my baby girl and carried her while they continued their debate. Actually, they wanted me to say something but I chose to listen more.

.

One kept emphasizing that there are still godly and decent ladies while the other insisted that they have all died or maybe yet to be born! I only looked back and smiled at them.

.

I began to ruminate on this issue. Truly, if we look at our society today, decency has grown wings and flown to ‘only God knows where’. Gone are the days when chastity is held so sacred. Gone are the days when the pride of a woman is in her SELF ESTEEM and DIGNITY .

.

Gone are the days when a man who needs a godly lady goes to the church with the hope of meeting one. Gone are the days when men believe they can only touch their wives on the wedding night, whoever does that now is termed a ‘mumu’ among his friends because they believe the lady has used his head! ” No lady is chaste, no more purity in any girl” they will insist. Why? because godly and decent women are scarce.

.

But in all these, the good news is that we still have them. Even in the midst of darkness, some have chosen to be lights.

.

I turned to my arguing friends and said “Well, it’s true that decent and godly ladies are scarce, it is also true that we still have them around, though they may be few. You can be lucky enough to meet one too BUT you must also be decent and Godly”.

.

Dear Lady, The world is indeed filled with darkness. Are you among the few decent ones who choose to live for God or you are among the multitude that keep living indecent lives? On campus, at work, in the neighbourhood, at church, what can be said of you?

.

Now, it is not about your past or who you used to be, it is about NOW!

Who are you becoming? Choose to be a light in the midst of darkness that God can easily recognize.

You can! Yes, I believe you can. And God will help you. I care for you.

Much love
