So I was so tired this hot saturday afternoon that I could barely walk. I had just left THE SUN office at Utako after attending a programme in the same area earlier. I had to draw deep inside me to gather strength in order to make the long journey home, so I trudged on laboriously on the dusty windy pathway that connects Utako to Wuse-Berger. Because I could not get a straight cab or bus to berger, I ended up at Wuse. It was another hard story there too because there was no cab going my way.
By this time, the deep strength I gathered was depreciating but I decided to manage a little trek forward. As I walked on, a cab stopped beside me and fortunately it was heading towards my area. I quickly jumped in, muttering thanks to God. It was just the driver and another male “passenger” (or so I thought) in front. I sat alone at the back and closed my eyes breathing heavily. After going a long distance and they didn’t stop to carry other passengers, a thought occurred to me that ‘what if I had been kidnapped’? But I shrugged it off and told my mind that even so, I didn’t mind. So long, they(the kidnappers) gave me a bed to lay on. I was that tired. I just needed to rest somewhere…
As we approached Wuye junction, the man in front indicated that he wanted to alight. Fortunately, I had gone to Wuye a few days earlier with a friend,Biola (just buka thinz) so the area was not completely new to me. Anyway, the funny man came down and gave the driver a ten dollar bill(kinda intriguing) and walked away briskly. Instead of the mumu driver to call him back himself, he turned to me and said “look at the money he gave me, is he new here? Please call him back”. I didn’t budge on my seat. Why should I be the one to call him back?(Eyes rolling). The man came back willingly before he was even called back(planned work o, why didn’t he cross the road and move on?) Then, the driver asked him why he was paid in dollars only for the man to respond in an hybrid accent nobody understood(when you are trying to speak like a janded person, confusing british accent with american accent and you end up not making sense at all, lol). The man walked away again and the driver still turned to me and said ” see o, what should I do? It seems this man doesn’t know what he’s doing oo,pls help me call him”. Good riddance to bad rubbish. I didn’t answer. Maybe they expected me to be interested in the dollar or say something to that effect. Before you could say Jack, the dollar man had surfaced again, saying he was going to swedish embassy or so. I immediately opened the door and jumped down and walked away briskly. Lo and behold, the driver carried the man again ooo, enroute the yeye embassy, lol.
By then, I knew I was involved with this yeye dollar 419ers,yet again. After leaving Lagos, I thought it was bye bye to 419ers, pickpockets,ne’er do well agberos, thugs and the likes, not knowing they are here in the capital city too. I expected only to hear of boko haram sparingly here or maybe a bomb here and there occasionally(don’t mind me, I have lost hope in the entity called Naij, so always expect the worst if you are always on the street). And of course, there were killings in my side of Apo some two weeks back by boko or so. It was in the news and everywhere.
I had a previous encounter with these dollar 419ers in “Lasgidi” last year. My favorite boss, Jonathan Eze had called me to meet him at Omole,Ikeja,Chief Tony Uranta’s house(Secretary of the Sovereign National Group/Conference). I dashed out of the house and headed to the main road in front of Multi-trex Cocoa Company. That was how a small car stopped for me while a man rushed to take my place they said no and indicated they wanted to carry me. I still went ahead because I was in a hurry. So as we moved on, the man beside me said he wanted to alight at the next junction and the driver said “what about the dollar in the booth, that he was going to take the man to police station”. The dollar man started begging that it was his boss that sent him on errand with the dollars from kaduna. This time around, there were three guys in the car plus the driver. Having read all this method of duping people before then, I knew I was in for it. I started praying under my breath. I had just laptop, my phone, all my ATM cards but no cash on me except fare. It was the laptop that was most important to me then. They wouldn’t get anything from the ATMs(lmao, you have to be streetwise in lagos. Hmmmm! Lagos and its people, na wa ooo) some had even expired and the functional ones were already empty. I already withdrew my whole salary few days before. So,nobody can steal my ATM card and smile later.
As they kept on arguing back and forth about the dollars, I told them I wanted to get down even though I had not reached my office bus stop not to talk of berger. All of a sudden, they all started abusing me, including the owner of the dollar, asking me why I wanted to alight when I had not gotten to where I told them I was going. In matters like this, they expect you to show interest in the dollar matter and even volunteer to follow them to see to the end of the matter whether at the station or pastor/alfa’s house to neutralize the juju they’ll claim is on the dollars.
Anyway, they stopped grudgingly on the long brigde with all of them yabbing me and seriously vexing just because I wanted to come down ooo. I didn’t talk, just came down jejely and trekked the rest of the journey to work. Being my first experience, I was so shaken and scared. I ddnt even know they would drop me. Oh boy! Was I glad they did?
Pray, when would these assholes stop this dollar thingy? It has become old fashioned, everyone is aware now. Except if you don’t read papers or you don’t listen to other people’s experiences. It’s just so sad….. I shake my head for these jobless individuals. Why target a plain me? When I don’t even have gold on my neck or tooth? Why not go and dupe people in Maitama or Garki? Abegiiiii, they are just a bunch of fools. Like lagbaja said “one million mumus”.
